WHAT IS REIKI?
The everyday stressors of life can trigger anxiety, tension, nervousness and depression. Many people push through, without understanding or even ignoring the harmful impact stress can have on their overall well-being. It may not be possible to avoid stress in your life, but there is a way to restore balance through the practice of Reiki. This ancient healing method guides the energy flow in the body, improving the circulation and balance of energy to support healing. Very simply, it is the transfer of energy through the palms of the practitioner’s hands to the patient with the intention of restoring emotional or physical health.
During a session, the client is fully clothed while resting comfortably on a massage table. The Reiki Practitioner gently places their hands on or above the patient’s body, focusing on specific energy locations. Clients may feel this transference in the form of heat, tingling or pulsing. Most people feel extremely relaxed and peaceful during their treatment, and many even fall asleep. Unlike others forms of touch therapy, no massage, pressure or manipulation is involved. Sessions include time on the table and discussion.
Melissa has always used body movement as a mode of expression and self-healing. Beginning with her first love, dance, she learned it was a powerful form of communication and release. Melissa’s introduction to yoga fostered her connection to self, mind and body; and led her to receive her yoga and yoga therapy certifications. It proved to be a source of empowerment that she would ultimately share with others through her business, MPower Yoga. Personal challenges inspired her to create a program for parents and caregivers of medically fragile children. Using therapeutic yoga, she developed and led classes that focused on bringing awareness to the importance of self-care and mindfulness in everyday life. Her program was embraced by Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, where Melissa had the privilege of assisting fellow parents and caregivers by teaching them to use therapeutic yoga and breathing techniques to lowered stress and create body awareness. Melissa continued to strengthen her mind/body connection by obtaining her Pilates mat certification in 2019. Along her path, Melissa began to recognize her ability to use energy as a method of healing others, which she now believes to be her life’s purpose. Under the instruction of Toni Craft, Melissa began her journey as a Certified Reiki Practitioner. She continues to learn new methods of the healing power of Reiki to benefit her clients.
